December 29, Sunday———————ACCOUNTABILITY TIME!

An audio recording of the following reading is available below.

Holy, Holy, Holy — Suggested interpretations abound regarding these hard to visualize “four living creatures” (v. 6b) and what they symbolize; however, our interest lies primarily on what they say about God.  First, they magnify His holiness, repeated three times for emphasis: “Holy, holy, holy” (v. 8a).  He is “holy” because he is “set apart” from all else.  He is the center of this heavenly vision, the four living creatures surrounding Him on all four sides.  This should remind us of our need to make sure that God occupies that central place in our lives, so that everything we are, think, and do revolves around Him and His will.  Their second words are, “the Lord God Almighty,” with “Lord” pointing to His authority, “God” indicating His deity, and “Almighty” speaking of His power.  He is the supreme sovereign, ruling over all people and all His creation with authority and power.  The final words of praise from these surrounding creatures have to do with time: “…who was and is and is to come!”  God is eternal; He has always existed and always will.  He is holy, eternal, and Master—three great reasons to worship Him.

December 30, Monday—————ACCOUNTABILITY REMINDER

An audio recording of the following reading is available below.

Still Be Holy — Verse 7 contains the sixth of seven benedictions (or “bestowing blessings”) in Revelation: “Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book” (v. 7).  Not only is “this book” of Revelation God’s Word, but the whole of the Bible must be “kept” (obeyed).  The Word of God is our standard for holiness, and it is by reading, meditating, memorizing, and following it that we grow in holiness.  As verse 11 stresses, we must continue being “righteous” (the things we do) and “holy” (the separated person we are).  Without holiness, “no one will see the Lord” (Heb. 12:14).

December 31, Tuesday—————-ACCOUNTABILITY FINAL DAY

An audio recording of the following reading is available below.

Holy to the End — Revelation ends with a warning and a promise.  The warning is about tampering with the Word of God: “if anyone adds to them … if anyone takes away from the words” (vv. 18-19).  Does this apply only to the book of Revelation?  No, Moses gave similar warnings about the Torah: “You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it” (Deut. 4:2; cf. 12:32).  From the first five books of the Bible to the last one, we have the Word of God, divinely and authoritatively given.  The ending promise of today’s reading comes from Jesus: “I am coming soon” (v. 20).  This expression of promise is found four times in Scripture, all in Revelation and three times in the last chapter.  As Peter wrote, “with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day” (2 Pet. 3:8).  Here, “soon” refers to being imminent, happening at any time.  What is our reward for being faithful to the end?  With the final “holy” in Scripture; we get to “share in the tree of life and in the holy city” (v. 19).  Come, Lord Jesus!
